Information on Nablus
Deep within the West Bank lays the treasured city of Nablus. This Palestinian municipality is located just 63 kilometers north of Jerusalem and is nestled between Mount Gerizim and Mount Ebal. A predominately Muslim community lives within the city’s borders.
A Brief History
The roots of the city can be traced back to around 72 CE, when it was founded by the Roman Emperor Vespasian. Nablus was long considered a major city for the trading industry. The city has long been a center for disputes and changes in government throughout the years. It has been a part of the Ottoman Empire and the British Mandate of Palestine. It has also fallen under the control of Israel and Jordan during its history.
Famous Soap
The city is known for its soap production. Their prized cleanser is comprised of virgin olive oil, a sodium compound and water. Most of the major production factories have closed in recent years, although some smaller businesses still make the soap as a souvenir for tourists.
Sites of Interest
Visitors can tour the Child Cultural Center to see beautiful art pieces and stage productions. The historical part of the town, known as the Old City, features many historical buildings and mosques. A view of the Abd al-Hadi Palace, which was constructed in the 19th century, offers tourists the perfect photo opportunity. Many shops and restaurants can be found in Martyrs Square.
